Voiceovers And Your Twitter Feed – The Not Silent Blog 11/28/17

Lately I’ve been trying to improve my social media experience, specifically my Twitter feed. I’ve been making it a point to like and re-tweet content of friends & colleagues I support. I’ve also been un-following lots of people for various professional and personal reasons. As a result, I’ve been paying a lot more attention to Twitter ads. Check this out…

As an experiment, in my Twitter feed I clicked on “Why am I seeing this ad” for a Google Cloud ad. This popped up:

I then clicked on “See your Twitter data.” This came up:

Just below this info is a button that says, “Request advertiser list”. I clicked on it and it sent me an email that was supposed to have a spreadsheet attached to it with a huge list (I did this a few weeks ago). For some reason it didn’t this time.

I went back and clicked “personalize ads setting”. This is what appeared:

Notice that every box is checked?

TIP OF THE WEEK

If I learned one thing from this exercise, it’s that I have even more control over my social media experience in general and my Twitter feed in particular than I had previously thought. It’s shocking how much data companies like Twitter and Facebook collect on you based on what you do via your smartphone and social media platforms. It’s even more shocking how many millions or billions of people who use smartphones & social media have never secured their browsing experience.

Go to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and whatever other social media platforms you use regularly.

Check your security settings as well as your ad settings and adjust them to suit you as needed. You will be amazed at how much of your information is out there!
