Voiceovers And Trusting Your Voice – The GKN Weekly Update 4/14/15

Hello and Happy Scrabble Day and That Sucks Day! I’ve been playing Scrabble on Facebook for years. I take a turn a day with each of my opponents. If you wanna play Scrabble with me, find me on Facebook. Trust me, it does not suck…

NEWS AND NOTES!

  1. Wednesday, April 15 @7:30 PM EST I will be speaking via webinar before the Tennessee Voiceover Exchange. I’ll be speaking about the business of voiceovers.

  2. Sunday, April 19 @1:00 PM EST I will be speaking at Top Shelf Studios in Milford, CT. The seminar is called, “Think Like a Business, Perform Like and Artist.”

Last week I landed a new client. Always a great way to start a story, right?

They hired me to narrate an introduction to an in-house presentation for a new product because the first voice talent they hired didn’t work out. They sent me a video storyboard complete with music and it had a very hip, edgy quality to it. Since it was short, I gave them three takes. I did the first two takes in an effort to match the tone of the storyboard: one smooth and one more gruff-sounding.

On the third take, I read the lines as plainly as I could. I never thought they’d use the third take but I put it in there to give them some contrast.  I also thought it was too “ordinary-sounding” and not like my “Tom+” sound that gets me most of my work. Guess which take they used?

TIP OF THE WEEK: One of the biggest misconceptions about being successful in the voiceover industry is that many think they have to alter their voice to achieve a desired effect, the desired effect usually being what’s in their head and not in the page. In cartoons and some video games sure, but more often than not that isn’t the case.

Trust your voice. Trust your training. Trust your ability to interpret a script without trying to “sound” like what you think you need to sound like. If you’re trying too hard, you’re trying too hard!

STUFF!: I finally started watching “Arrow” on the CW. It’s pretty good! Not great, but good. I’m enjoying all the subtle comic book references and how it ties in with “The Flash“. Looking forward to binge-watching Season 2!
