Prioritizing is a pain in the ass.
I do love it, though. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces fit together differently every time. A fresh challenge every week to keep you on your toes. Yay!
I mention this because the past few weeks have been Nutsy Fagan-like, what with the comic cons on consecutive weekends and coming home only to get slammed with voiceover work. Yes yes, I know these are First World problems and I should (and do) count my blessings for all the great things in my life, but **** still needs to get done and the time in which to do them is limited.
We all have things in life that pull us in different directions both personal, interpersonal, and professional. The trick is knowing when and how much to do of what and trying not to be an ass-hat whilst doing it.
With that in mind, how should you go about prioritizing your ****?
TIP OF THE WEEK
When I’m having trouble prioritizing my ****, my go-to is Stephen Covey’s Quadrants:
Quadrant Two, that which Not Urgent but Important, is where the true professionals dwell. Focusing on the long-term, being proactive, and looking at the big picture will help your business, your acumen, and your skill sets grow. Focusing on Quadrant Two will also shrink Quadrant One so there will be less fires to put out. It will also give you more leisure time for yourself and quality time with those you care about.
To further break it down, I look at all the tasks I have to do and subdivide them into the five categories of your voiceover business: Cash Flow, Tools, Technique, Marketing, and Health. That way I’m not neglecting any area of my business.
Look, you’re not going to get everything that you want to get done all the time. It’s about making the right choices for you, your business, and your village in the moment. It’s not easy but the more you make proactive, long-term choices, the easier everything else becomes and better off you will be.
