I recently narrated Breaking Through Gridlock by Jason Jay and Gabriel Grant. This was an interesting one!
Breaking Through Gridlock examines the myriad of ways we get stuck in our conversations with others, primarily when we are trying to convince others to take action or even just to understand other people’s viewpoints. What pitfalls do you always fall into? What verbal or psychological bait always hooks you?
The book focuses on the importance of environmental sustainability and convincing political, corporate, and educational institutions to engage in “greener” practices, but they also cite numerous examples to apply their methodology to work situations and personal relationships
It’s a fascinating book and I highly recommend it!
TIP OF THE WEEK
How does this apply to the world of voiceovers? Tell me if these conversations sound familiar:
You’re trying to explain what you do (or want to do) for a living to friends, family, or co-workers
You’re trying to explain your rate structure to a potential or current client
You’re trying to explain to a low-balling voice talent why they should raise their rates
To get unstuck, you must look into your past and examine the way you think about pretty much everything by engaging in what the authors call “dynamic authenticity”. You must connect with internal motivations and express what you really want. Spend less time focusing on how “right” you are and more time on sincerely expressing your values.
