Voiceover And Timing – The Not Silent Blog 5/12/20

Lately, the question of timing has come up in the voiceover industry. Timing as in, “Considering the pandemic, is now the right time to become a voice actor?”

Tough question.

It’s been bandied about the social media voiceover groups and spirited debates have ensued. Veteran voice actors & coaches have been approached by aspirants asking that question more than ever.

Certain predatory coaches and demo producers claim that the timing is perfect so they can cash in on the newbs. Some voice actors claim that the timing is awful because they don’t want even more competition than they already have.

BTW I have to give kudos to a voice talent that I can’t name since their comment was in a private group. To paraphrase, when it comes to getting voiceover work you can have either:

  1. a fixed mindset based in a belief in lack, or

  2. a growth mindset based in a belief in abundance.

He said I have the latter and that was a really nice thing to say. 🙂

TIP OF THE WEEK

If you are timing your entry into the voiceover industry, consider this. Assuming that you now have the time to take the plunge:

Do you have the Cash Flow to properly invest in your voiceover business?

Do you have the Tools (demo, website, home recording setup, etc.) to start seeking clients and booking sessions right now?

Do you have the Technique (proper training) to start auditioning and booking right now?

Do you have the Marketing skills, strategies, and tactics in place to start engaging with voice seekers right now?

Do you have the Health (physical, mental, emotional) to make the right decisions about your potential voiceover career? Getting into voiceovers out of desperation because you just lost your job may lead to even bigger problems down the road.

Timing is everything (as they say) but so is making sound, logical decisions.
