GKN Weekly Update 9/4/12 – Do You Ever Take A Mental Health Day?

Happy Post Labor Day letdown! Fall is officially unofficially here. And yes, there have been sightings of Halloween and X-Mas stuff in some stores. Does that drive you as bonkers as me?

What time is it? That’s right kids, it’s Blatant Self-Promotion Time! The audiobook I narrated “All Facts Considered: The Essential Library of Inessential Knowledge” is now on sale!

If you like NPR and goofy obscure facts, then you will LOVE this book. Click here to check it out on Audible.

This has been a crazy year for me on many levels, almost 100% of it good. The fallout of that is that I’ve noticed that I’m “on” seven days a week for most weeks. You know, auditioning, booking, attending events, etc. on nights and weekends. Yes, this is a “good” problem, but all work and no play makes Tommy a cranky boy. What to do?

So, a few months ago I added to my Monthly Action Plan “Take a Mental Health Day”. What does that mean? I’ve noticed that it means different things to different people. First off, the official term is derived from World Mental Health Day which is every October 10th. You can read some of the more casual definitions on Urban Dictionary (one of my favorite websites of all time!) For me it means getting out of the house and spending part of, if not the entire day, somewhere fun & interesting and not being in contact with anyone that I interact with on a regular basis (family, close friends). I pick a different place each month and I don’t tell anyone where I’m going or what I’m doing. It works for me and I love it!

Reactions to my Mental Health Day idea from my clan have been mixed. When I explained it, some of them said, “Well, you’ll talk to me on your Mental Health Day, right?” Some were kidding, others were not.

I’m also pretty sure that reactions to this blog entry will also be mixed. No doubt there are several of you out there who feel that you can’t take a Mental Health Day for family or financial reasons and who the hell am I to feel the need for it when I have a “fun & easy job” and I don’t have a mortgage, spouse, or kids. Is that a fair assessment? All I know is that EVERYBODY needs to recharge their batteries once in a while, regardless of their situation.

TIP OF THE WEEK

You really need to make time for yourself once in a while. Even if it’s just a few hours reading, sleeping in, seeing a movie, anything to let you relax and collect yourself. If you are one of the aforementioned people who feel that they can’t make any time for themselves ever, then you really need to take a look at your situation. Having some alone time is not selfish, it’s necessary. Like the clown and the fat purple guy used to say, “You deserve a break today!”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it. Alfred Hitchcock
