Happy Memorial Happy! I hope everyone had a fun, safe, and burn-free weekend. I was able to hit two BBQ’s and I had a gutful of fun.
So I started narrating a new audio book. I’ve had two four-hour sessions and I feel great but my throat is killing me! Green tea with honey and lemon to the rescue. I’m sorry to say this has been a very difficult project. I won’t comment on the content, but the author’s native language is not English and I don’t think the script has been proofed or edited in any way. The engineer and I have had to make changes on the fly to ensure that it’s proper English and the sentences make sense. This means it’s taking longer than I projected and since this is an independent project I landed I’m paying the studio out of my own pocket (which I did budget for in my bid) but I have to book extra time. Needless to say, this is posing some issues for me.
How do I address this issue with the client, if at all? Do I charge for the adjustments I’ve had to make to the script? (there have been an average of four or five per page) If so, how much? What if the extra work I have to do to complete this forces me past the agreed-upon deadline?
TIP OF THE WEEK: Wow, now I have to give a Tip of the Week to myself. Awkward! Just calm down, Tom. Your client is very nice and has seemed extremely reasonable during the contract negotiation process. Just call her and explain the situation as if it’s a problem that both of you are on the same side of, striving to solve it together. It’ll be fine, dude. Don’t be such a sissy!
