I head out to Faffcon 9 in Charlotte this week so what a better time to talk about my mobile recording rig?
We talked about this same subject a few years ago, coincidentally before I went to Faffcon 7. Since my gear has changed a bit, I figure it’s the perfect time to re-hash. The pic below has a link to the older blog entry.
…and this is the new rig.
Some is different, some is the same.
This is a Senheisser MKH-416 microphone on my desktop mic stand. We talked about the 416 in severe detail last year in this blog entry.
This Star-Wars decorated pipe-bomb-looking thing holds the 416 when I travel. I built it thanks to the super-useful blog written by Marc Scott.
I still use the same Mic Port Pro. It’s a compact pre-amp used to power your microphone. It has volume controls for both your mic and your headphones.
Instead of my tablet I now use a custom-built laptop designed for mobile recording thanks to the fantastic voice talent and tech-guru Sean Caldwell. My audio-technica ATH-M45 headphones are still going strong.
TIP OF THE WEEK
I’ve been using this mobile recording rig for over a year now and it’s been fantastic. Despite how great it works, it only works as well as the space you are recording in. Since the majority of the time this setup will be used in a hotel room, here are some hotel room recording tips.
Choose your space wisely. I recommend either a corner of the room, a desk, or a closet.
Pillows are your friend. They deaden the space and can be placed at angles. Angles are your friend, too!
Luggage racks and ironing boards rule. They make a great confined space. You can line them with pillows and stick your mobile recording rig right in there.

If they look too open it’s because I draped a bath towel over my head so it wouldn’t echo.
