I spent the bulk of last week narrating “Safe Harbor” by Judith Arnold.
That’s the Harlequin romance novel I’ve mentioned recently. It’s fun! The story is pretty simple and there are only a handful of characters. The two main characters are in their mid-twenties so it’s been pretty easy on both the vocal folds and the brain, unlike the last audio book where I had to be Mark Twain AND Nikola Tesla!
Anyway, I was reading ahead and I got to Chapter Nine. Ooh la la Chapter Nine! It wasn’t outright erotic but it was pretty darn steamy and not in a crude way, either. “Tastefully done”, I believe the phrase is. My engineer is a young lady and I let her know that Chapter Nine was coming up. I wanted to give her a heads-up and make sure she was comfortable with it. She suggested we have a glass of wine beforehand! It was very funny & light-hearted and when we got to Chapter Nine it wasn’t weird at all. Actually, we didn’t have time to be goofy or weird about it anyway because we were so focused on pace & tone & getting the lines right. When we finished she said, “That was nothing!” and we had a good laugh.
TIP OF THE WEEK
Is working with suggestive material a big deal, a little deal, or no deal? For me personally, I say no deal. Ideally, regardless of the gender, age, marital status, or lifestyle of your colleagues, the content of the work shouldn’t matter. HOWEVER, you still want to be considerate at the same time. What may be no big deal to you might be to somebody else. I mentioned the upcoming Chapter Nine as a courtesy and it turned out to be a non-issue, but I didn’t want to take any chances. Always treat people the way you would want to be treated!

STUFF
I just discovered a great web series called “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”. Click here to check it out. In each episode Jerry Seinfeld picks up a different comic and they go out for coffee. Of course hilarity ensues. I recommend the one with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. It’s fun!
